  • What's a Bald Faced Hornet?
Fact:  A large nest of Bald Faced Hornets was on the campground in
2007. Why we did we not  destroy them?  We did contact pest control
folks - over 10 feet high you are not allowed to spray. Then we did some
research on the Bald Faced Hornet.  What we found is that we really
wanted to keep them around since they were removing the fly
population. Numerous times (By the way I'm allergic to Wasps/Hornets)
the hornets would fly near my  head - they were removing flies from the
area .  The old  saying "If you do not bother them it they will not bother
you held true".  Side note on  Deer Flies,  like blood and are attracted to
slow moving blue - thats why we sometimes have blue cups wrapped in
fly paper atop  the golf carts. In 2007 our blue cups did not catch any
Deer Flies, where in years past they were full.

Nature
Occasionally campers that are naive demand we take action, action being
termination of creature.  We rarely do that because we believe there has to be
justification for any action we take. There has to be an immediate threat.  For
instance just because its a snake does not make it a threat, we have no known
poisonous snakes on the campground.  So we ask campers to have
understanding of their surroundings, not to panic and not to leave food out  or in
fire rings to attract skunks and raccoons.
Birds:
We have a large migration of birds through-out the season,  The most notable
we have seen are  the  Pileated Woodpecker, Wood Duck, Wild Turkey's,
Downy Woodpecker, Goldfinch, Red-Tailed Hawks,  Owls.   One camper said
they noted 23 different species of birds on the campground.  Now I did not
know much about birds that seems like alot to me,.
Critters:
We have on occasion seen Bats, Skunks, Foxes, Raccoons and Flying
Squirrels to name a few.  Tree frogs and toads are also plentiful.
White Tailed Deer love the acorns in the winter. Box turtle, snapping turtles, and
crayfish have been encountered. Chipmunks are abundant.  Gardener , Black
and Rat Snakes
Trees: Lots
There are numerous trees at our campground, Black Walnut, Maples, Red
Oaks, White Oaks, Black Cherry, Birch, Beech, Pin Oaks, Hickory, Dogwood,
Apple, Tulip, Elms, Aspen,  Poplar, and a few pines
